Over the course of recent decades, a large number of scientific publications have described the principles behind coat colour and coat variation. Due to the complex nature of information and improved interpretation, an overview has been produced for each animal of the coat-colour and coat-variation genes. This overview is available for dogs, cats and horses.
Coat colour and coat variation are influenced by many hereditary factors. The DNA tests are based on physiological effects in the body, in which the production and distribution of pigments result in many coat-colour variations. In a number of cases, an animal’s coat colour can only be determined using DNA tests.
